DIY Matcha Latte Recipe

My Favorite Matcha Latte

Recently, I was introduced to matcha and started learning about the benefits of drinking it instead of coffee. Matcha is basically just crushed green tea powder. But the way the plants are grown for matcha is a lot different, making it higher in chlorophyll and amino acids. Matcha is very high in antioxidants, boosts brain function, & reduces inflammation in the body.

I haven’t been having a great time with caffeine lately – it’s been exacerbating my anxiety and making me irritable. And while there is still caffeine in matcha, it’s a little easier on the body and not near as much as what’s in my other coffee based drink. It contains L-theanine, which does alter the affects of caffeine. This promotes alertness and helps avoid the caffeine crash. I had tried matcha once before and felt that it tasted like dirt-grass, and wrote it off. A friend of mine had me order it with oat milk at Starbucks to try it again, and I felt like that made a world of a difference. Then, Starbucks came out with their new lavender matcha latte and Jake got it one day to try. I tasted it and it’s been the only thing I’ve ordered since (and that’s saying a lot, considering I’ve only gotten the exact same drink EVERY time I’ve been to Starbucks for my entire life). Unfortunately, the matcha drinks at Starbucks are a little more expensive than my usual. But the bright side is, it is so much easier to recreate at home than their standard coffee drinks. I thought I would share how I’ve been making it at home!

Matcha Latte Recipe Ingredients (Makes about an 10-12oz latte)

-Wide Mouth Pint Mason Jar (Note: Use any cup that you’d like, I just find this makes it easier for me to measure out the ingredients).

-1/2 tsp of matcha (I get mine from Thrive Market)

-3oz water

-Ice

-Simple Syrup (or the flavoring of your choice)

-Oatmilk

-Collagen Powder (optional)

Instructions:

-Mix 1/2 tsp of matcha with 3oz water until combined. I just use a handheld frother.

-(Optional) Add one scoop of collagen powder and combine. I like to add the collagen for an extra protein boost for the day. Plus it’s great for your skin, hair, and nails.

-Add your desired amount of ice.

-Add your desired amount of syrup – this will determine how sweet your drink is. (Note: We make our own brown sugar simple syrup at home and use that, but you could use any coffee syrup of your choosing as long as it has minimal ingredients. A lot of people really love to use caramel!)

-Add in your oatmilk until your drink is full.

-Sometimes, If I’m feeling extra, I’ll froth up some heavy cream or half and half to put on top.

And that’s it! I wish I could explain how it tastes, but I can’t. It’s just really good! Let me know if you try it.
